Your body defends against the loss of too much carbon dioxide by reducing the amount of air you can push thru your airpipes. It does this by causing the the walls of your airpipes to do either swell up or clog up or both.

Now what if we consider that our airpipes start right at the tip of our noses. When we have a blocked nose, or an itchy runny nose, what if that was an extension of our defenses?

If this is true, then simply by increasing the levels of carbon dioxide in our airpipes - then the swelling [or mucus production] in our nasal area should theoretically reduce.

Lets test it!

Before we start, try to get an approximation of how blocked your nostrils are. You can do this by closing your mouth, blocking off one nostril, and breathing gently. Determine how blocked it is, how much whistling is going on, or any other sensation you can feel. Then check the other nostril by blocking the first nostril. The more blocked they are the better this demonstration.

Blocked or runny nose? You can change it right now by changing your breathing

All you have to do is trap a little more carbon dioxide in. An easy way to do this is:
  • Take a normal, unforced breath in
  • Let a little bit of air out so you are not full
  • Then pinch your nose closed, and hold your breath. [Mouth closed!]
  • Hold only for about 5 seconds after your first desire to take a breath. Do not hold as long as you can, as this will make control of your breathing when you stop holding more difficult.
  • When you release your nose and start breathing again, breathe as little as possible. Keep very still. This will keep the carbon dioxide you have trapped in, so that it can open your nose.
If you are not sure if your nose is clearer, simply repeat this simple exercise a few times with about 15 seconds between each breath hold.

If you managed to make a change in how blocked your nose is, [or even cleared it completely] then you have just been more successful than years of drugs or surgery can be.

If you already breathe mostly through your nose, and still get asthma or migraine or hayfever, then you are ready for the next step in Buteyko.

Hey - just a quick note that if you managed to alter your nose with the breathing above - CONGRATULATIONS!   The other thing is that for a limited time you can get the entire Buteyko Asthma Training System - which has the identical training for blocked noses - for only $US27.  And yes - the same guarantee that applies for asthma will apply for blocked nose.
